    • WPS Governors – Who are we?

The Governors’ Role

The core role of the governing body is to provide confident, strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance.

The three core functions of the governing board are:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Holding senior leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

Setting strategic framework

Strategic leadership is the governing body’s first core function, and involves: setting the organisation’s overall strategic framework, including its vision and strategic priorities. It also includes responsibility for setting and modelling its culture, values and core values.

Governing bodies:

  • Ensure the organisation has a clear vision – which is articulated in a specific written statement
  • Ensure there is a strategy in place for achieving this vision
  • Set and safeguard an ethos of high expectations
  • Foster a common culture, values and ethos across the whole organisation

Holding senior leaders to account

Governing bodies should work to support and strengthen the leadership of their school and senior leadership team; and hold them to account for the day-to-day running of their school(s).

Senior leaders are responsible for implementing the strategic framework established by the full governing body. The full governing body itself should play a strategic role, and avoid routine involvement in operational matters.

Everyone on the board should have a basic understanding of the financial cycle

Overseeing financial performance

Everyone on the governing body should have a basic understanding of the financial cycle and the legal requirements of the school on accountability and expenditure. The board should also include someone with particular financial expertise.

How we Work

The Governors meet together as a full governing body twice a term (excluding Dec. and Aug) and in addition we have 2 committees, Curriculum and Standards and Finance and Premises that also meet twice termly.

Our statutory committees which cover Pay and HT Performance Management meet at regular intervals as required.

The Health and Safety governor is also a member of the school Safety Committee which meets half-termly.

Each governor also has links to specific areas of interest – for example: Safeguarding, Health and Safety, SEN, Pupil Premium etc. and are also linked to different subject areas in the curriculum

Governors are expected to visit in their specialist role and /or subject link role at least once a term where possible. Governors also make informal visits to school for special events and assemblies.
